RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The histopathological characteristics of the overlapping disease states of Brugada syndrome (BrS) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) have not been fully elucidated. METHODS: A 71-year-old man showed coved-type ST-segment elevation with the right precordial leads, and the echocardiography demonstrated right ventricular (RV) dilatation. After 11 months, he died of a polymorphic VT storm. RESULTS: The pathological tissue demonstrated fibrofatty degeneration in the free wall of the RV outflow tract based on the heart autopsy. CONCLUSION: The overlapping disease states of BrS and ARVC showed histopathological characteristics consistent with ARVC.

RESUMO

The presence of trace contaminants in ultra-pure water (UPW) used in fabrication process can greatly affect the yield and quality of industrial products. In the present study, the electrodialytic enrichment of metal cations as a means of continuously monitoring the UPW quality was studied. A newly designed electrodialytic enrichment device (EED) was used to quantitatively transfer metal ions from samples to dilute nitric acid, which was then directly introduced into an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument. This process could be performed without contamination of the sample, and the enrichment factor was solely dependent on the flow rate ratio of the sample and acceptor solutions. The transference of analytes into the acidic solution improved the responsivity of the ICP-MS analysis, especially at low concentrations of less than 1 µg/L. Blank solutions to support the analysis of UPW could be produced using the EED effluent, from which metal ions were quantitatively removed. In addition, calibration curves with concentration ranges of several nanograms per liter were obtained by preparing standards using a dynamic gravimetric method while employing a single bottle and continuous mass monitoring to avoid any contamination from the volumetric flasks. The sensitivities associated with the ICP-MS analysis of a number of trace metal ions were improved by one or two orders of magnitude. The data show that the present EED is able to continuously produce enriched analyte solutions to allow the ongoing monitoring of UPW quality.

RESUMO

The experiments described in the present study approached nerve injury from both a biochemical and anatomical perspective by monitoring changes in expression of preprotachykinin (PPT) mRNA encoding the prototypic tachykinin substance P and related peptide species in neurons of the rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) following unilateral chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve. In situ hybridization histochemistry (ISHH) analyses in conjunction with computer-assisted image processing were employed to quantify levels of PPT mRNA distributed in DRG neurons. Injury-induced changes in PPT mRNA expression by affected DRG neurons included: (1) at early postoperative times, generally increased levels of PPT mRNA associated with small and intermediate-size B cells exhibiting normal morphology, (2) at late postoperative times, markedly decreased levels of PPT mRNA associated with degenerating B cells, and (3) induction of PPT gene expression by large A cells which is highly correlated with degenerative morphological changes. The significant aspects of these changes are discussed with special emphasis on the contribution of altered transmitter expression by DRG neurons to the pathophysiology of causalgia. In particular, the induction of PPT gene expression by many of the large neurons undergoing degenerative changes may represent an important biochemical parameter which is associated with the development and persistence of experimental allodynia.
